Frequently Asked Questions

How do you replicate game targets?

Here at Hillfort Sporting, we use specially designed clay trap trailers that enable us to easily move the traps to the best location and throw a selection of different clays at once. We also utilise the topography of the estate, for example, throwing clays over sharp hedges to replicate partridges and out of tall woodland to simulate pheasants. A mixture of standard and midi sized clays are used and the speed is varied for an added challenge.

What is a simulated game day?

A simulated game day is run in a very similar style to a traditional driven game day. There are usually between 3 to 4 drives (shooting sessions) as well as elevenses and lunch. During a drive, the shooters will stand on set markers (pegs) that are spread out over an area and the clays will be thrown from traps in a flurry to replicate birds being driven over. Shooters will not be able to see the traps, so will not know exactly where the clays are coming from. It's very exciting, a lot of fun, and a great way to improve your shooting.

Do I need previous shooting experience?

No, you do not need to have shot before to join us at Hillfort Sporting. We have a great team of instructors who can be by your side for the whole day, ensuring you are safe, comfortable and confident.

Do I need my own gun?

If you have your own gun, we recommend bringing it, but we do also have a selection of club guns available.

Are children welcome at Hillfort Sporting?

Absolutely, we are very child friendly here at Hillfort! If you have a junior looking to shoot, please do just get in touch in advanced so we can discuss age and individual requirements.

Can I bring my dog?

Dogs are very welcome, we just ask that they are kept on leads and you clean up after them. We do also recommend ensuring your dog is comfortable with gun shots before bringing them.

Should I wear tweeds?

You can dress as formally or informally as you like, it’s all about having a good time. Full tweeds are very welcome, shooting vests are advisable, and sturdy comfortable footwear is a must.

What do I need to bring

We recommend bringing a hat and glasses (we can also provide both for you) for safety. Gloves or a barrel guard is useful, especially if you are shooting a side by side, as the barrels do tend to get hot.

If you are bringing your own cartridges, we ask that you use fibre wads and nothing heavier than 24 grams.
